The device seems to be working well. It takes 3 AA batteries to run the fan that distributes the repellent. But it also has a power input port so you can add a 4.5v 100mA power adapter if you want, and then not have to use batteries. The repellent comes in the form of a round disc of goo inside an aluminum shell. It is sealed in a separate plastic envelope, and smells a bit like geraniums or citronella. To place the disc inside the diffuser, you raise the lid on top, which lifts up an attached internal tray. You place the disc on the tray then lower and latch the lid. Turn the diffuser (a motorized fan) on by flipping the on/off switch, and adjust a slider to regulate the amount of repellent being diffused. I am happy with this device overall, though I would have preferred a different color. The one in the Amazon ad is white, whereas the one I received is a minty green color that doesn't blend in with the decor at all.

Its like this vibrant mint green color that would only match stuff from the 50s. It seems to make a noticible difference though. Only comes w/ one cartridge. You need to order refillls. Smells stronly of citronella.

I bought this two days ago and it's sitting next to me right now, and I just found a mosquito on my leg. So I would say that this doesn't work so well.

I generally am not bothered by mosquitos, but they feast on my wife. She tried using this while sitting out back on our deck. It didn't seem to make any difference...she was still continuously bitten. However, the one we received was white as advertised.

Doesn't work well wasted my money. I wondered why Menards didn't have refills; because no one would want to buy one after trying this inefficient and ineffective product.
